This necklace is a truly quirky and unique piece of jewellery! It is a process that takes about 3 months to finalise! The seedpod was found on one of our regular family trips to the Perth Zoo and comes from a Bottle Tree (Brachychiton rupestris).
The pod is layered with fine silver clay and slick about 40 times over the course of about 6 weeks, intermittently sanded and smoothed again. The basic structure is then kiln fired, whereby the seed pod burns away and leaves an unfinished structure. A repetitive process of layering more silver clay, smoothing, sanding and re-firing continues for many more times. Before and after the third firing the pod is sanded back and polished until it resembles the original again, after which a dark patina is added to the inside. It is then tumbled for approximately 5 hours and hand polished. A little sterling silver bird adorns the pod, which is assembled onto a really long chunky chain. The seedpod as pictured in the image measures approximately 4.2cm x 2.1cm x 1.9cm. But these measurements would vary greatly in each piece depending on the pod size. The chain measures approximately 37" or 90 cm.
